The ask
Vodafone asked us to help bring some clarity to a big leap in mobile tech: 5G Standalone (5GSA). Most people know 5G, but what they don’t realise is that today’s version still relies on 4G behind the scenes. 5GSA is the first time the network truly stands on its own.
Vodafone wanted to make that subject feel simple, sharp, and engaging. Through an animated explainer, the Nicely Done team needed to break down how 5GSA unlocks seriously futuristic possibilities. For example, self-driving cars, remote surgery, and next-level smart factories, without drowning people in jargon. Challenge, accepted!
Our approach
We crafted a distinctive 2D illustrative animation style to ensure the explainer had a cohesive and recognisable visual identity.
As the narrative of the animation shifted to more user-centric themes, we introduced a vibrant, illustrative style inspired by our Deep Sea and Space explainers. To bridge the two aesthetics, we used dynamic triangular transitions. This allowed us to clearly distinguish the complex technical content from the more accessible, user-facing visuals.
The outcome
The animation was extremely well received by senior stakeholders. It was distributed widely across Vodafone’s internal and external channels, and the explainer was also featured on their website, reaching a broad audience.
